What is the DDA and why is it important?

The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1995 became effective from 1 October, 2004: The act imposes duties on employers, trade organisations, service providers and landlords not to discriminate against disabled persons.  It is now unlawful for service providers to treat disabled people less favourably than other people for a reason related to their disability.  
A conservative estimate puts between 12% and 13% of the population with some degree of impairment. Many, though not all, face barriers to movement in the environment.
